Former Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mele Kyari, is currently being questioned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Abuja.
Kyari was invited on Wednesday to respond to inquiries concerning financial and technical matters related to his tenure as head of the national oil company.
Sources within the EFCC confirmed that he is with investigators at the agency’s headquarters. The interrogation comes as part of ongoing investigations into alleged mismanagement of funds earmarked for Nigeria’s refineries.
Kyari had previously been placed on the EFCC watch list in connection with a $7.2 billion refinery turnaround maintenance project. A Federal High Court in Abuja recently ordered the temporary freezing of four bank accounts linked to him pending the conclusion of the probe.
Mele Kyari served as GMD of NNPC from 2019 until July 2024, during which the corporation transitioned into a limited liability company.
