Why Power Went Off At Nigeria’s Embassy
Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has explained why electricity was cut off at the Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria, South Africa. The ministry said the disruption was linked to delays in the approval of Nigeria’s 2026 national budget.
According to officials, the slow passage of the budget affected the timely release of funds needed to meet key obligations at the mission.
This led to unpaid municipal charges, which resulted in the temporary disconnection of power supply.
The ministry noted that the situation was not due to negligence by embassy staff but was tied to funding challenges beyond their control.
It added that efforts were made to manage the situation while awaiting budgetary approvals.
Electricity has since been restored after the outstanding bills were settled, with the ministry assuring that steps are being taken to prevent a repeat. It reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring Nigerian missions abroad operate without disruption.
