UK Deal Sparks Fresh Concerns
The African Democratic Congress has raised doubts over a £746 million agreement between Nigeria and the United Kingdom, warning that the terms may favour the foreign partner.
The deal is aimed at upgrading key port facilities in Lagos.
The agreement, reached during a meeting between Bola Tinubu and Keir Starmer, will see funding support tied to the rehabilitation of Apapa and Tin Can Island ports.
Officials say it aligns with plans to boost infrastructure and economic growth.
However, the party argued that the financing structure could channel a large share of the funds back to British firms, raising concerns about local benefits.
It also pointed to conditions that may limit Nigeria’s gains from the project.
The ADC is now calling for full disclosure of the loan terms, job opportunities, and local participation in the project, warning that lack of clarity could deepen public scepticism about the agreement.
