Boko Haram Strikes At Borno State
Several Nigerian soldiers were killed when Boko Haram fighters stormed a military base in Sabon Gari, Damboa Local Government Area of Borno State.
The attack, which happened on Thursday, targeted an army formation and left both soldiers and members of the Civilian Joint Task Force among the casualties.
Security sources said the attackers arrived in force, opening fire on the base and overwhelming troops. Armoured vehicles and gun trucks were destroyed, while large quantities of ammunition were taken away during the raid.
The Islamic State West Africa Province later claimed responsibility and released footage showing gunmen firing at the facility.
The assault followed another deadly incident earlier in the week when seven soldiers, including a newly promoted lieutenant colonel, were killed during an ambush while travelling from Maiduguri to Damasak.
Insurgents reportedly used explosives and heavy weapons, leaving several troops injured and others unaccounted for.
ISWAP has expanded its control around the Lake Chad region since the death of former Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau, drawing in fighters from rival factions.
Despite repeated claims by the military that the insurgency has been pushed back, attacks continue to claim lives and deepen insecurity across parts of Borno and neighbouring states.
