A federal lawmaker, Jafaru Mohammad Ali Damisa, narrowly escaped an assassination attempt on Tuesday after suspected terrorists ambushed his convoy.
The incident took place along the Lumma–Babanna road in the Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State.
Damisa, who represents the Borgu and Agwara Federal Constituency, was travelling to Babanna for an official assignment when gunmen suddenly opened fire on his convoy.
The assailants, identified as “Lakurawa terrorists, locally referred to as bandits,” launched the attack in the afternoon, catching the security personnel off guard.
Security escorts immediately retaliated, engaging the attackers in a fierce gun battle. Unfortunately, one soldier was killed during the exchange of fire.
Several others sustained serious injuries and were taken to a nearby hospital for medical attention, while some political supporters were also wounded in the attack.
Eyewitnesses said the gunmen fired continuously, hitting several vehicles in the convoy.
At least “11 vandalised vehicles” were reportedly riddled with bullets before being towed away from the scene.
Despite the heavy shooting, Damisa managed to escape the ambush unhurt.
