The Federal Government has warned power generation companies connected to Nigeria’s national grid that they risk disconnection if they fail to implement free governor control (FGC) across their generating units.
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) issued the directive in Order No. NERC/2025/094, which took effect on September 1, 2025. The order, signed in August by NERC Vice-Chairman Musiliu Oseni and Commissioner for Legal, Licensing and Compliance Dafe Akpeneye, is aimed at safeguarding the grid from potential collapses.
Under the directive, any generating unit that fails to comply for 90 consecutive days could be completely disconnected from the grid.
FGC enables a turbine or generator’s governor to automatically adjust output in response to fluctuations in grid frequency, ensuring system stability.
“Section 12.6.2 of the Grid Code for the Nigerian Electricity Transmission System requires all generating units to be fitted with fast-acting FGC capable of regulating turbine speed and adjusting power output based on frequency deviations, i.e., primary control,” the order stated.
