Tragedy struck the Lagos State civil service after a senior official, Mrs. Serifat Talabi, died just four days before her retirement and her 60th birthday celebration.
Talabi, who served as the Director of Procurement at the Lagos State Residents Registration Agency (LASRRA), was killed by a hit-and-run driver on Saturday while crossing the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway near the Redemption Camp in Ogun State.
According to a source within the agency, the late director was on her way across the expressway when she was struck by an unidentified vehicle. “Efforts were made to rush her to the hospital, but she was confirmed dead on arrival,” the source said.
Another staff member disclosed that Talabi was due to retire on Monday, October 13, but had postponed her farewell event to Wednesday, October 22, so the agency’s General Manager could attend.
“She had already printed invitation cards and sent them out to colleagues, friends, and family for the celebration, which was meant to mark both her retirement and 60th birthday,” the source added.
Her sudden death has left colleagues and loved ones in deep shock, especially as preparations for the double celebration were already in place.
Family members have since released details of her burial. According to information shared on a WhatsApp group, a wake will hold on October 23, 2025, while the burial service is scheduled for October 24, 2025. Both ceremonies will take place at 10 Ore-Ofe Street, Ara Hall Bus Stop, Ibafo, Ogun State.
What was meant to be a joyous week of retirement and thanksgiving has now turned into one of mourning and heartbreak for the Lagos civil service community and all who knew Serifat Talabi.
