Seun Kuti has strongly cautioned Wizkid’s fanbase against comparing the Afrobeats star to his late father, Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, describing such claims as disrespectful and deeply insulting.
During an Instagram livestream, the musician and activist expressed anger over recurring online debates that drag Fela’s name into fan rivalries. He said the comparisons were driven by ignorance rather than admiration and urged Wizkid fans to focus on supporting their artist without invoking Fela’s legacy.
He said, “Wizkid FC keep Fela’s name out of your mouths. You try to claim that your fake artiste is the new Fela. Then when you people saw that the shoes were too big to fill and people like me also did not allow you to get away with those insults… It is actually an insult [to compare Wizkid to Fela].”
Kuti went on to accuse the fanbase of lacking respect, stressing that their attitude did not stem from rebellion or artistic defiance but from ignorance. He also condemned the repeated use of Fela’s name in online arguments, saying it showed a disregard for the legacy of the late icon.
“Wizkid fans are online disrespecting Fela again. Why must you always involve Fela in your petty discussions? The overzealousness of some fans has significantly affected the music industry negatively. Some artists can’t even collaborate because of fan rivalries,” he said.
Kuti further criticized what he described as blind fan obsession, arguing that constant comparisons reveal a deeper dissatisfaction with the music itself.
“I think Wizkid FC is the most ignorant fanbase in the world… You need to stop misbehaving. Concentrate on your artist. Can’t you enjoy their music without comparing it to something else? Do you know why you cannot enjoy your artist’s music without comparing it to something else? It is because the music does not fill your spirit. You can pretend to be enjoying it, but spiritually, you are not satisfied,” he added.
His remarks have since stirred intense reactions online, once again spotlighting the tension between fan culture and respect for musical legacies in Nigeria’s entertainment space.
“Wizkid fc needs to keep Fela’s name out of their mouth. You people try to steal the man image. You try to claim your fake artiste is the new Fela. It’s an insult to Fela to call Wizkid the new Fela. Wizkid fc are the most !gn0 rãnt fanbase in the world.”
