Super Falcons striker Ifeoma Onumonu has announced her retirement from football, closing the curtain on a career that stretched over a decade in the United States, France, and Nigeria.

The 31-year-old forward made the announcement in an emotional Instagram post on Saturday, calling her decision a “natural conclusion” to a journey that started when she was just eight years old.

“It is with a heart full of gratitude that I bid farewell to my playing career on the pitch,” Onumonu wrote, recalling her earliest football memories with a youth side named Magic in the United States. “I don’t remember if I played an actual position or if I even passed the ball. All I wanted to do was run as fast as I could and score.”

Onumonu’s passion for the game carried her through 22 years of football, during which she achieved several career highlights. She lifted the NWSL championship trophy in the U.S., represented Nigeria at the World Cup and Olympics, and helped the Super Falcons clinch their historic 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title in Morocco earlier this year.

Born in California to a Nigerian father, Onumonu started her professional career in the NWSL with the Boston Breakers before spells at Portland Thorns, Reign FC, Utah Royals, and NJ/NY Gotham FC. She later moved to France, where she played for Montpellier HSC.

The American-born forward, who switched allegiance from the United States to Nigeria in 2021, made her Super Falcons debut the same year and went on to become a respected squad member, admired for her composure, movement, and work ethic.

Although her role in Nigeria’s 2025 WAFCON victory was limited, she was among the team’s most experienced players, having also featured in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup and the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Onumonu stressed that retirement does not mean walking away from football entirely. “This is not a goodbye to football, but a new beginning. I am excited to explore opportunities off the pitch, using the skills and lessons learned from my time on it,” she said.

She closed her statement with appreciation for everyone who supported her career. “Thank you to all the staff, teammates, coaches, doctors, fans, and my incredible friends and family for your unwavering support through the years. Although my time as a player has come to an end, my love and devotion for this game will never waver.”
