Malami Alleges Human Rights Breach In EFCC Case
Former attorney general Abubakar Malami has accused security agencies of blocking his right to a fair hearing in an ongoing forfeiture case linked to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
The allegation was made in Abuja on Saturday through a statement issued by his media aide, who said the dispute arose during interim forfeiture proceedings before the Federal High Court involving the EFCC.
According to Malami’s camp, problems began after the court granted him bail but officials delayed presenting his international passports for about a week, leaving him in custody longer than required and slowing the execution of the bail order.
The situation reportedly worsened after his release from Kuje Custodial Centre, when operatives of the Department of State Services rearrested him and held him for five days without access to lawyers or family members, at a time his defence was due to commence in court.
Malami insists the actions weakened his ability to consult with counsel and respond properly to the case, warning that repeated rearrests and delayed compliance with court orders threaten judicial authority and constitutional rights, even as he says he remains ready to defend himself through lawful means.
