NERC Raises Alarm Over Meter Gap
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission has revealed that more than 41 per cent of electricity consumers across the country are still without prepaid meters.
The disclosure raises fresh concerns over estimated billing and power sector challenges.
NERC stated that millions of customers continue to rely on estimated charges despite ongoing metering programmes introduced by electricity distribution companies.
The situation has remained a major complaint among consumers nationwide.
The commission noted that efforts are still being made to increase meter distribution and reduce the number of unmetered users.
It added that closing the gap remains important for transparency and proper billing in the power sector.
Many electricity users have repeatedly called for faster installation of meters to avoid disputed bills and improve trust between consumers and distribution companies.
The latest figures show that metering challenges are still affecting a large part of the population.
