NLC Threatens Protest And Boycotts Of Workers
In Abuja, the Nigeria Labour Congress has raised the alarm over the ongoing amendment of the Electoral Act, warning that workers may take to the streets and stay away from future elections if electronic transmission of results is excluded.
The threat comes amid rising tension over proposed changes to the law.
The warning was made on Sunday by NLC President Joe Ajaero, who said the labour movement is watching developments closely.
He stressed that the credibility of future polls depends on clear legal backing for technology-driven processes.
According to the union, the amended law must give “an unambiguous mandate” to the Independent National Electoral Commission to electronically transmit and collate results directly from polling units in real time.
Labour leaders insist that anything short of this leaves room for abuse and public distrust.
The NLC said it would not hesitate to mobilise nationwide action if lawmakers fail to address the issue.
The congress maintained that transparent elections are central to democracy and warned that workers would resist any move seen as weakening the electoral process.
