The detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has taken popular social media influencer Reno Omokri to court, demanding N60 billion for defamation.
Kanu said Reno made a false and damaging post on Twitter (X) on July 6, 2025, accusing him, IPOB, and the Eastern Security Network (ESN) of killing soldiers, police officers, and other security agents — without any proof.
According to Kanu, the post described him and IPOB as terrorists, even though no court in Nigeria has ever found him guilty of such crimes. He believes the post is not only false but also dangerous to his ongoing court case in Abuja.
Kanu said the statement was meant to damage his name, mislead the public, and create hate against him and his tribe (Ndigbo). He also accused Reno of trying to influence the outcome of his trial through social media.
Kanu, through his lawyer P.N. Agazie, said he sent Reno a warning letter on July 10, 2025, asking him to
Remove the post,
Apologize in two national newspapers and on Twitter,
And promise not to publish such things again.
But according to Kanu, Reno ignored the letter. Now, he’s asking the court to:
Pay him N50 billion as damages for the harm caused,
Pay an extra N10 billion for making the post with bad intention,
Publish an apology and remove the post within 7 days after the court judgment,
And stop making or sharing similar statements again.
He’s also asking for the legal costs and 10% interest on the money until it’s fully paid.
This case will be closely followed, especially as it involves issues of free speech, tribal sensitivity, and the responsibilities of public figures online.
