The Edo State Police Command has arrested a social media influencer, Osarobo Omoyemen, popularly known as Madam Oil Rice, for spreading a false kidnapping claim.
According to a statement from the command’s Public Relations Officer, Moses Yamu, Omoyemen alleged on social media that she was kidnapped on Upper Sakponba Road in Benin City and later rescued by police who detained her at Akpata Police Station and demanded N10,000 as bail.
Following this report, the police launched an investigation, which revealed that the entire story was fabricated intentionally.
The statement read:
“The Edo State Police Command wishes to clarify that a woman known as ‘Madam Oil Rice’ recently posted a false narrative online claiming she was kidnapped and rescued by police who demanded bail money.
“After a thorough inquiry, it was confirmed that the story was staged deliberately. During questioning, the 24-year-old confessed she fabricated the incident to create online content and gain followers on her TikTok page.”
Yamu emphasised that the false content was misleading and could incite public distrust towards the police and cause unnecessary unrest in the state.
He further revealed that accomplices involved in the scheme would be identified and held accountable.
“It was also discovered she deleted an earlier video where an accomplice was encouraging viewers to follow her page, clearly exposing their intention behind the hoax,” he said.
The suspect was arrested and charged in court on November 20, 2025. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend her collaborators to ensure they face legal consequences.
“This action is aimed at deterring others from using social media to spread panic or disrupt public order,” Yamu added.
He warned that the police command opposes any form of fake news that threatens peace and security and urged the public to verify information before sharing.
Yamu assured that the police remain dedicated to safeguarding the safety and tranquillity of Edo State residents.
