Renowned Iranian actor Homayoun Ershadi passed away at 78 on Tuesday following a struggle with cancer.
Ershadi gained international acclaim for his role in Abbas Kiarostami’s Palme d’Or-winning film, Taste of Cherry (1997), which tells the story of a man seeking someone to bury him after his planned suicide.

This role launched his respected acting career later in life and brought him worldwide recognition.
Born in Isfahan in 1947, Ershadi initially studied architecture before transitioning to film.
He also appeared in Hollywood productions, including The Kite Runner (2007), A Most Wanted Man (2014), and had a brief role in Zero Dark Thirty (2012).
Iran’s House of Cinema confirmed his death, expressing condolences to the arts community and praising him as an influential figure in cinema, theatre, and television.
Government spokeswoman Fatemeh Mohajerani described his passing as “sorrowful” and honoured him as a “noble and thoughtful actor of Iranian cinema” in a post on X.
