Senate New Presidency Tenure Proposal Sparks Tension
Senator Kenneth Eze has called for a major change to Nigeria’s presidential tenure system, proposing a single 16-year term instead of the current two four-year terms.
He said the reform would reshape leadership and governance in the country.
The lawmaker argued that the existing two-term structure keeps presidents focused on re-election rather than long-term development.
In his view, leaders spend too much time preparing for another campaign instead of concentrating fully on policy and national growth.
Eze suggested scrapping the current arrangement and replacing it with one extended term.
He believes a single, longer tenure would remove electoral pressure and allow presidents to carry out lasting reforms without political distractions.
The proposal is expected to spark debate, as any change to presidential tenure would require constitutional amendments and broad national support before it can take effect.
