President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has insisted that Nigeria will not bow to intimidation, following renewed international concerns about the alleged persecution of Christians in the country.
In a statement posted on his verified X handle on Friday, Tinubu responded firmly to remarks made by former United States President Donald Trump, who recently threatened possible military action against Nigeria over alleged religious killings.
The Nigerian leader stressed that his administration would continue to uphold peace and unity, while maintaining the nation’s dignity on the global stage.
He wrote, “We are indeed faced with terrorism — a challenge Nigeria has faced for almost two decades, and we will not back down. We will decisively defeat terrorism and claim victory in this battle. Security is non-negotiable, and we will never compromise on this principle. With unwavering courage and a steadfast commitment to the rule of law, we will prevail.”
Tinubu assured Nigerians that his government remains fully committed to defeating terrorism and restoring lasting peace across the country.
Reiterating that security is a cornerstone of his administration’s agenda, the President said no amount of foreign pressure would distract Nigeria from pursuing its sovereign path to stability.
He also urged international partners to maintain their support for Nigeria, saying collaboration remains vital to consolidating progress in the fight against terrorism.
The statement followed Trump’s recent claim that he had instructed the U.S. Defence Department to prepare for potential military action against Nigeria if killings of Christians allegedly continue.
Trump had earlier designated Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” over what he described as systematic persecution of Christians and widespread religious violence.
