The Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru, has pledged that the Ministry of Defence and the Military High Command will ensure the safety and protection of every officer carrying out lawful duties.
He gave the assurance while addressing journalists at a ministerial press briefing on the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Celebration and Remembrance Day held at the National Defence College, Abuja, on Wednesday.
The statement came in response to a question regarding the recent altercation between the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and Navy Lieutenant A. M. Yerima, over a disputed parcel of land in Abuja allegedly linked to a former Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Awwal Gambo (retd).
Badaru stated, “At the Ministry, and indeed in the Armed Forces, we will always protect our officers on lawful duty. So we are looking into this issue, and we assure that any officer on lawful duty will be protected. We will not allow anything to happen to him so far as he is doing his job, and doing it well.”
The Defence Minister’s assurance follows growing public concern over the confrontation, which has sparked debate about civil-military relations and the treatment of uniformed personnel performing official assignments.
