Shock and anger gripped Ukraine on Saturday after former parliamentary speaker Andriy Parubiy was shot dead in Lviv. Authorities confirmed the killing, which President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned as a “horrific murder.”
Zelensky vowed that investigators would pursue every lead to identify those responsible. “A thorough investigation must be carried out,” he said, as the nation mourned one of its most prominent political figures.
Police reported that Parubiy, 54, “died on the spot as a result of his injuries.” Security forces are searching for the gunman, though the motive remains unclear.
Parubiy, who served as speaker of parliament from 2016 to 2019, was a staunch supporter of the pro-European Orange Revolution in 2004 and the Maidan Revolution in 2014, both pivotal moments in Ukraine’s political transformation.
His assassination has sent shockwaves through Ukrainian politics, underscoring the loss of a leader closely associated with the country’s democratic struggles.
