IPOB Criticizes Heavy Security at Onitsha Market
The Indigenous People of Biafra has criticised the heavy presence of security forces at the Onitsha Main Market in Anambra State, describing the operation as unnecessary and extreme.
The group said the action targeted traders and residents who were carrying out a peaceful protest.
The statement, issued on Tuesday by IPOB spokesperson Emma Powerful, accused Governor Chukwuma Soludo of allowing soldiers and police officers to flood the commercial hub as though the area was under siege.
According to the group, the deployment created fear among innocent traders and disrupted daily business activities.
IPOB alleged that security operatives fired live ammunition at unarmed protesters who were reacting to what it described as draconian sit at home enforcement orders.
The group said the action violated basic human rights and democratic values, warning that such measures deepen public anger and mistrust.
IPOB said it remains committed to peace and dialogue, urging protesters to stay calm and lawful while pursuing self-determination through democratic means
