The Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC) is reviewing three key regulatory instruments to reduce internet risks and improve sector compliance, Executive Vice Chairman Dr. Aminu Maida said during a public inquiry held in Abuja.
Speaking to industry experts and stakeholders, Maida stressed the importance of regularly updating communication regulations to keep pace with fast-evolving technology and ensure operators adhere to standards.
Represented by Executive Commissioner Barr. Rimini Makama, the EVC, highlighted that these regulatory tools are vital for the healthy operation and continued growth of Nigeria’s communications industry.
“The legislation under review plays a vital role in ensuring the communication sector remains viable,” he said, noting the need to refine rules to match emerging technological advances.
The regulations being examined include licensing rules, enforcement procedures, and a revised internet code of practice designed to protect users’ rights while holding service providers to high ethical and technical standards.
“The internet cannot be left unguarded, given the risks it poses and its potential misuse,” Maida added.
Earlier, Head of Legal and Regulatory Services, Mrs. Chizua White, explained that the public inquiry aims to create a regulatory environment that fosters a vibrant communications market while protecting stakeholders through enforceable laws and sanctions.
The proposed amendments focus on strengthening compliance obligations for operators and expanding regulatory coverage to address new technologies and ideas.
White warned that unchecked internet growth exposes vulnerable groups to crimes such as identity theft, hate speech, misinformation, and harmful content. The updated code seeks to ensure operators build safeguards to reduce such threats.
