NNPC Confirms New Oil Discovery
Nigeria is at the centre of a fresh offshore oil discovery after the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited confirmed a new well drilled by Chevron Nigeria Limited in the western Niger Delta.
The discovery came from the Awodi-07 appraisal and exploration well, operated by Chevron under its joint venture with NNPC Ltd, during drilling activities carried out between late November and mid-December 2025.
The well was drilled in shallow offshore waters, where tests and data checks later showed hydrocarbons spread across several reservoir layers, pointing to fresh oil and gas potential in the area.
The operation was completed without incident and met all safety and regulatory requirements, with the well secured after the programme ended, closing the exploration phase.
NNPC Ltd said the outcome strengthens belief in the asset and supports plans to grow oil production, boost energy supply and create economic value through the joint venture, which targets output of about 146,000 barrels per day
