The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has resumed payment of arrears to corps members, making its first disbursement on Wednesday since the last payment on June 3 after a two-month delay.
The arrears are tied to the recently approved N77,000 monthly allowance by the Federal Government.
Back in April, NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, assured that both serving and recently discharged corps members would benefit from the new allowance. Speaking at the Batch A 2025 Pre-Mobilisation Workshop in Abuja, he said the scheme had already secured the bank details of outgoing members to ensure payments once funds were released.
“Once funds are released to us to offset the arrears, we will pay them. Even our corps members who passed out recently will benefit,” he stated, while stressing the government’s commitment to being “both responsible and responsive to the needs of Nigerians.”
The confirmation of resumed payment was also shared by a former corps member, who told PUNCH, “After waiting for two months, I didn’t expect to see another payment alert. But honestly, it’s not just about the money; it’s about feeling like our efforts actually count.”
The arrears, covering July 2024 to March 2025, come after widespread frustration over the delayed implementation of the allowance increase, which was introduced as part of government efforts to ease economic hardship for young Nigerians.
