Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has refuted a viral social media post allegedly quoting her as criticising President Bola Tinubu over Nigeria’s worsening security challenges.
In a statement posted on her verified X handle, the former Nigerian Finance Minister described the circulating message as entirely fake and misleading, urging the public to disregard it.
She explained that the false statement, which had been widely shared across multiple platforms, was part of ongoing attempts by mischief-makers to use her name to create political tension.
“I have recently been made aware of yet another fake post circulating on social media purporting to quote me as criticising President Tinubu. This is completely false,” she said.
Okonjo-Iweala appealed to Nigerians to always verify information before sharing it and warned against the deliberate misuse of public figures’ identities for political propaganda.
The WTO boss reaffirmed her dedication to her global duties, noting that her focus remains on promoting trade-led economic growth and development for countries around the world, including Nigeria.
