Kogi State Polytechnic has terminated the appointment of a lecturer, Mukhtar Muhammed, following allegations of sexual misconduct involving a student.
The institution also dismissed another staff member, Funmilayo Afolabi, due to her prolonged absence from duty, after she was reported to have been away from work for nine months.
These decisions were announced in a statement released on Sunday by Mrs Uredo Omale, Director of Public Relations and Protocol at the polytechnic, following the 72nd Regular Meeting of the Governing Council.
According to the statement, the meeting was chaired by the Council Chairman, Barrister Sani Shaibu, and held on Friday, December 19, 2025, at the Council Chamber of the institution.
Omale explained that the council approved the termination of Mr Muhammed, an Administrative Officer II, after reviewing the recommendations of the Appointments, Promotions and Disciplinary Committee concerning allegations of sexual misconduct. She added that Mrs Afolabi, an Assistant Chief Executive Officer, was dismissed for abandoning her duties for nine months without official approval.
On other disciplinary issues, the council also sanctioned the demotion of a Deputy Registrar, Mr Audu Mathew, to the position of Principal Assistant Registrar for negligence of duty, reiterating the institution’s zero tolerance for misconduct and dereliction of responsibility.
Beyond disciplinary actions, the council approved the elevation of 11 Principal Lecturers to the rank of Chief Lecturer.
It also authorised the promotion of 49 academic staff and 71 non-teaching staff during the 2024 promotion exercise, as well as 225 academic staff and 227 non-teaching staff for the 2025 exercise.
The statement emphasised that the decisions were aimed at reinforcing discipline, recognising merit, and enhancing service delivery within the polytechnic.
