The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress has urged the Chief Judge of the state, Justice Simeon Amadi, to obey a court order stopping any action connected to the impeachment move against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu.
The party said the call became necessary after recent steps taken by the State House of Assembly.
The issue centres on Port Harcourt, where lawmakers directed the Chief Judge to set up a seven-man panel to probe allegations of misconduct against the governor and his deputy. The Assembly took the step during a plenary session after resolving to push ahead with impeachment proceedings.
However, a Rivers State High Court sitting in Oyibo intervened on the same day and issued an interim injunction. The court barred the Speaker, the Clerk of the House, and the Chief Judge from sending, receiving, or acting on any impeachment-related communication for seven days, pending further hearing.
Reacting to the development, the APC, through its spokesman Darlington Nwauju, faulted the lawmakers, many of whom belong to the ruling party.
The party described their action as excessive and warned that it could harm the unity and future of the APC in Rivers State, especially at a time when restraint was needed.
The party also called on its national leadership to step in and activate internal measures to prevent further damage. It warned that ignoring the court order and pressing ahead with impeachment could lead to embarrassment and weaken the party’s standing in the state.
