Security authorities say the deadly attack on Woro and nearby communities in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State was carried out by terrorists angered by the refusal of residents to accept extremist teachings.
The explanation came from the Defence Headquarters in Abuja.
According to the military, the assailants stormed the communities after villagers rejected attempts to impose ideological beliefs on them.
The refusal, officials said, triggered violent reprisals that led to mass killings and destruction.
The Defence Headquarters explained that the attackers were not acting randomly but were pursuing an agenda built around forced indoctrination.
When the communities stood their ground, the situation turned deadly, leaving several families devastated.
Security forces said operations are ongoing in the affected areas to track down those responsible and restore calm.
The military also assured residents that steps are being taken to prevent further attacks and protect vulnerable communities.
