Atiku Accuses Tinubu Govt Of Strangling Democracy
In Abuja, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has accused the government of undermining democracy over claims linked to the African Democratic Congress convention.
He said there were moves to revoke the licence of Rainbow Event Centre for agreeing to host the gathering. The allegation has added to rising political tension. The convention is scheduled for April 14.
The claim followed earlier remarks from party spokesperson Bolaji Abdullahi, who said the venue owner came under pressure from officials tied to the Federal Capital Territory.
According to him, the centre had already met all financial and contractual requirements. He added that warnings were issued over the decision to host the event. The allegation has not been officially confirmed.
Reacting, Atiku described the situation as a wider threat to democratic practice. He argued that blocking a lawful political gathering reflects misuse of power.
He said forcing private businesses to deny access to opposition parties weakens democratic rights. The development, he added, could erode public confidence in the system.
Despite the controversy, the party said it would proceed with the convention. It insisted it had done nothing wrong and would not be deterred.
The dispute has drawn attention to the role of Bola Tinubu and Nyesom Wike in the unfolding row. The situation continues to fuel debate over political space and freedom of assembly.
