PDP Rejects Jonathan 2027 Plan
A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party has denied reports claiming it planned to endorse former President Goodluck Jonathan as its presidential candidate for the 2027 election.
The party described the reports as false and unauthorised. PDP spokesman Jungudo Mohammed said no convention had been approved for such a purpose.
He added that the claims were created to stir confusion within the political space.
The reaction followed an announcement by another PDP faction led by Tanimu Turaki, which claimed it would hold a convention in Abuja to adopt Jonathan for the 2027 race.
The development came days after Sandy Onor was reportedly screened and presented as the party’s presidential flag bearer.
The party insisted all its primaries had already been concluded in line with electoral laws and INEC guidelines.
The PDP also urged Jonathan to publicly distance himself from the move to protect his image and preserve the credibility he built during his time in office.
According to the party, allowing such claims to circulate without clarification could damage confidence in the democratic process. It maintained that no recognised organ of the PDP approved the reported convention or endorsement plan.
The party further called on security agencies to investigate those behind the reports and prosecute anyone found spreading false political information.
It warned that it would no longer tolerate activities capable of dragging the party into disrepute.
The PDP said it remains committed to internal democracy, lawful procedures and protecting its constitutional structure ahead of the 2027 elections.
