Subsidy Removal Saved Nigeria Economy – Tinubu
President Bola Tinubu has defended the removal of fuel subsidy, saying the decision prevented Nigeria from sliding into a deeper financial crisis.
He made the remark while reflecting on key economic reforms introduced by his administration.
According to the President, the subsidy regime had become unsustainable and was draining public funds that could be used for infrastructure, healthcare, education and other essential services.
He maintained that urgent action was needed to stabilise the economy.
Tinubu said the reform was difficult and placed pressure on many Nigerians, but argued that keeping the subsidy would have worsened fiscal challenges and increased economic uncertainty.
He noted that the government chose long-term recovery over short-term political convenience.
The President added that the savings from subsidy removal have improved public finances and provided more resources for development projects.
He expressed confidence that the reform would continue to support economic recovery and future growth.
