The Federal Capital Territory Administration’s Mandate Secretary for Education, Danlami Hayyo, announced that about 60 to 70 percent of public secondary school renovation projects across the FCT are expected to be completed by the first quarter of 2026.
Speaking in Abuja shortly after returning to office following a three-week suspension, Hayyo praised FCT Minister Nyesom Wike for his reinstatement and reaffirmed his dedication to advancing the education sector’s development.
Hayyo revealed that over 100 public secondary schools have already been fully renovated under the ongoing rehabilitation programme, with several more nearing completion.
He described this progress as unprecedented, saying no other regime in the FCT has achieved such widespread school transformation, and expressed confidence that the FCT leads the nation in school infrastructure quality.
Addressing the cause of his suspension, Hayyo clarified that it stemmed from an unauthorised circular by a director ordering early school closures over alleged security threats—actions beyond the director’s authority without approval from the mandate secretary or the minister.
He expressed gratitude to Minister Wike for his understanding and reinstatement, while emphasising the importance of enhanced capacity building for senior education officials, particularly directors.
Hayyo highlighted plans to implement refresher training for directors to ensure they fully understand their roles, responsibilities, and proper communication channels within the education secretariat.
The News Agency of Nigeria reported that Hayyo was suspended on November 25 after the controversial directive circulated and was reinstated on December 17 by Minister Wike.
