The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has confirmed that the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) will expand from 12 to 16 participating teams starting with the 2026 edition, which will take place in Morocco from March 17 to April 3, 2026.
In a statement, CAF’s Executive Committee said the decision aligns with its vision to boost the growth and competitiveness of women’s football across Africa. The expansion will provide more opportunities for countries to feature on the continental stage and strengthen the development of the women’s game.
Since the qualification process for the 2026 tournament has already been completed, CAF approved a special selection process to determine the four additional teams. Based on the current FIFA Women’s World Rankings, the four highest-ranked teams eliminated in the final qualifying round — Cameroon (66th), Côte d’Ivoire (71st), Mali (79th), and Egypt (95th) — will now join the competition.
They will feature alongside the 12 nations that already secured their spots: hosts Morocco, Zambia, Tanzania, Malawi, Algeria, Nigeria, Ghana, Burkina Faso, Kenya, Cape Verde, South Africa, and Senegal.
CAF noted that the WAFCON also doubles as Africa’s qualifying tournament for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil, meaning the expanded format could see more African teams competing on the global stage.
