Oil Marketers Defends NMDPRA Import Licences
In Abuja, oil marketers have explained that the decision by the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority to resume issuing petrol and diesel import licences is meant to stabilise supply and avoid shortages.
The clarification comes amid concerns that the move signals a reversal of earlier efforts to rely more on local refining.
Industry sources said the licences are being issued to cover gaps in supply, especially during periods when domestic output cannot meet demand.
They noted that the aim is to keep fuel available nationwide and prevent queues and sudden price spikes.
Marketers argued that imports remain necessary due to ongoing challenges with local refineries, logistics and distribution.
According to them, stopping imports entirely without sufficient local capacity could disrupt the market and hurt consumers.
They added that the regulator’s action is a temporary safeguard, stressing that long-term stability still depends on improved refining capacity, better infrastructure and consistent policy direction.
