Former Vice President and 2023 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar says his political ambition is not about desperation for power but a determination to reposition Nigeria for greatness.
Speaking on Saturday in Lagos through Prof. Ola Olateju of Achievers University, Owo, at a reception hosted by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to welcome prominent defectors from the PDP and Labour Party, Atiku said the ADC coalition is focused on building a new Nigeria rather than serving individual ambitions.
“Atiku Abubakar’s plan is to build a better Nigeria. So, it’s not about him being president at all costs. It’s about having a government that can deliver for Nigerians. ADC, to us, is not just a party but a movement,” Olateju said on his behalf.
Atiku, who recently left the PDP with key allies to join the ADC, said Nigeria urgently needs a fresh start as citizens face hardship from subsidy removal, inflation, and insecurity. He described the ADC as a platform for good governance and collective sacrifice.
He assured that the party’s 2027 presidential ticket would be open to all, with no imposition of candidates. “Whoever emerges will represent the collective voice and aspiration of Nigerians. The point is not Atiku for president at all costs, not Obi for president at all costs. It is about a better Nigeria,” he said.
The event featured the defection of several PDP heavyweights, including Board of Trustees member Dr. Abimbola Ogunkelu, former Lagos PDP chairmen Chief Muritala Ashorobi and Retired Capt. Tunji Shelle, Lagos Central Vice Chairman, and former PDP Youth Leader Tai Benedict.
They were received by ADC leaders such as National Secretary Rauf Aregbesola, Senator Kolawole Ogunwale, and Lagos State Chairman George Ashiru.
Atiku called on Nigerians to rise above partisan divisions and back a coalition that puts national interest ahead of personal ambition.
