WAEC Changes Exam Timeline After Deadly Delivery Crisis
The West African Examinations Council has reverted to its earlier 48-hour distribution schedule for examination papers following widespread disruption linked to a recent change in its logistics system.
The adjustment affects the ongoing WASSCE across Nigeria after schools reported late delivery of question papers.
The council had introduced a 24-hour delivery plan to reduce exam malpractice and prevent leaks.
However, the tighter timeline created serious transport delays, with many examination centres receiving papers late and candidates forced to sit for exams at night under difficult conditions.
The situation worsened after three WAEC officials, Eleshin Dennis Olayinka, Dan-Malam Add’ua Muhammed and Yusuf Umar Gwamna, died in a crash along the Gombe–Yola road while transporting examination materials.
The accident raised fresh concerns about staff safety under the rushed system.
WAEC has now returned to the 48-hour model to restore order in its operations and ensure smoother delivery of remaining papers.
Education stakeholders are urging the council to balance exam security with safer logistics for workers and better conditions for students.
