FG Mandates Drug Tests In Secondary Schools
The Federal Government has introduced compulsory drug testing for secondary school students as part of fresh measures aimed at tackling substance abuse in schools across Nigeria.
Under the new policy, all newly admitted students will undergo drug screening before gaining entry into school environments.
The guidelines also direct schools to carry out random and periodic drug tests on both new and returning students at least once every academic session.
Students found with banned substances or narcotic drugs without approval from school authorities could face disciplinary action under the new rules.
According to the policy, students who test positive will first receive counselling and treatment supervised by school authorities.
Those who repeatedly fail subsequent tests may be referred for professional rehabilitation, while students who continue testing positive after treatment could face temporary suspension from school.
The government said the policy is aimed at improving student behaviour, mental health and academic performance while creating safer learning environments.
Schools are also expected to set up disciplinary committees, while violent incidents linked to drug abuse must be reported to security agencies.
