Lecturer Suspended After Viral Exam Punishment Video
Kwara State Polytechnic has suspended a lecturer after a viral video showed him caning candidates sitting for the Interim Joint Matriculation Board examination on the institution’s premises.
The footage sparked public outrage and renewed concerns over the use of corporal punishment in educational settings.
The video showed several candidates kneeling with their hands raised while receiving strokes of a cane on their palms.
The incident drew criticism from students and education stakeholders, who argued that physical punishment has no place in modern learning environments.
The National Association of Nigerian Students condemned the act and urged the institution to investigate the matter.
The student body maintained that discipline should be enforced through lawful and respectful measures rather than physical force.
In response, the polytechnic clarified that those involved were IJMB candidates, not its regular students.
The management described the lecturer’s conduct as unacceptable, suspended him pending investigation, and promised to take steps to prevent a repeat of such incidents.
