ICPC Explains El Rufai Access Ban
The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission has defended its refusal to allow leaders of the African Democratic Congress to visit former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai in detention.
The commission said the decision followed a court order restricting access to specific individuals only.
ICPC spokesperson John Odey said the ADC had formally written to request a visit by party leaders, including Rauf Aregbesola and Bolaji Abdullahi.
According to him, the commission replied the party before the visit, explaining that only El-Rufai’s immediate family members, lawyers and doctors were permitted access.
The commission also denied claims that opposition leaders were harassed or intimidated at its Abuja headquarters.
Odey explained that armed police officers seen at the entrance were part of the regular security presence usually stationed at the facility.
El-Rufai is currently facing trial over multiple corruption-related charges linked to procurement and financial offences.
The former governor has pleaded not guilty, while the ADC continues to raise concerns over his treatment in custody.
