Kogi Central Braces For Struggle In 2027 Senate Race
Kogi Central is heading for a fierce contest in 2027 as former governor Yahaya Bello and Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan prepare for a direct battle over the senatorial seat.
Bello announced his intention to run during a visit to traditional rulers in Ebiraland, drawing backing from key figures within the APC and setting the tone for a high-stakes race.
Bello, who led Kogi State from 2016 to 2024, enjoys strong influence within the ruling party’s structure across the district. Supporters point to his projects and political network as assets that could boost his chances.
Governor Ahmed Ododo has also publicly urged him to answer calls to represent the district at the National Assembly.
Akpoti-Uduaghan, the first woman to represent Kogi Central in the Senate, has brushed aside concerns about Bello’s entry into the race.
Through her media aide, she said, “We don’t see it as a threat. In fact, we are happy that he wants to contest.
We are waiting for them.” Since taking office in 2023 after a legal tussle, she has built a reputation as an outspoken lawmaker despite facing political pressure.
Party loyalties and shifting alliances are already shaping the field. While Bello is expected to run on the APC platform, there are indications Akpoti-Uduaghan may reconsider her position within the PDP amid internal uncertainty.
With both camps confident and grassroots structures in motion, Kogi Central is shaping up as one of the state’s key battlegrounds ahead of 2027.
