Tinubu Won’t Give Us Power And Democracy – Amaechi
At ADC National Convention Abuja 2026 in Abuja, former Transport Minister Rotimi Amaechi told members of the African Democratic Congress that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu would not hand over power to the opposition.
He urged party leaders to unite quickly and choose a strong candidate ahead of the 2027 elections.
He spoke during the gathering on Tuesday in the federal capital, where opposition figures converged amid rising political tension.
Amaechi criticised the state of security, pointing to killings, kidnappings and displacement across parts of the country. He also questioned restrictions around political gatherings, linking them to wider concerns about democratic space.
In explaining his stance, he said the current leadership was focused on holding power rather than allowing open competition.
He argued that opposition parties must organise effectively if they hope to challenge the ruling government. His remarks came as debates over governance and security continue to dominate national discourse.
The convention also took place against a backdrop of internal crisis within the ADC.
A faction led by David Mark expelled several members, including Nafiu Bala and Leke Abejide, over alleged anti-party actions. The dispute remains tied to ongoing court battles and leadership struggles within the party.
