Military Stands By Jilli Operation
In Christopher Musa’s latest remarks, the Federal Government defended a military strike on Jilli in Borno State, insisting the operation targeted insurgent networks rather than civilians.
He spoke after a security meeting led by Bola Tinubu, as concerns grew over reported casualties. The incident has drawn national attention amid ongoing counterinsurgency efforts in the North-East.
According to the minister, the strike was based on intelligence identifying the location as a support base for terrorist operations.
He maintained that “There was no innocent person there. Anybody in that location knew what they were doing. They were there for business with terrorists.” He added that security forces acted deliberately after confirming the site’s role in insurgent logistics.
He further explained that Jilli had long been treated as a restricted zone rather than a normal civilian market. Musa said the area served as a meeting point for fighters and suppliers who sustain their activities.
He also argued that financial gain continues to attract people into the conflict economy despite the risks involved.
While reports of civilian deaths continue to circulate, the minister questioned their accuracy and called for verified evidence. He stressed that those who knowingly support insurgents become part of the threat.
Meanwhile, Babagana Zulum confirmed the market had been shut years earlier, describing it as a long-standing hub for insurgent activity.
