Lionel Messi delivered a commanding performance as Argentina defeated Angola 2-0 in Luanda on Friday, marking his first goal on African soil.

The friendly, organized to celebrate 50 years of Angolan independence, took place at a packed Estadio Nacional 11 de Novembro, where tickets were sold for just $1. Argentina’s display was built around the impressive partnership between Messi and Lautaro Martínez.

The opening goal came just before halftime. Messi, finding space on the right, threaded a perfect pass to Martínez, who finished cleanly for his 36th international goal, giving Argentina a deserved 1–0 lead. The duo combined once more late in the match, with Martínez setting up Messi. Seven minutes from time, Martínez slid a pass into Messi’s path inside the box, and the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner calmly converted for his 115th goal for Argentina. Both stars were substituted shortly afterward, having already secured the outcome.

The match reportedly carried a $12 million appearance fee and was Argentina’s only fixture during the international window, serving as a low-intensity warm-up for Lionel Scaloni’s squad. For Angola, it provided a valuable test ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations, where they will face Egypt, South Africa, and Zimbabwe in a challenging group.

While Argentina were heavy favourites — ranked second in the world, 87 places above Angola — the occasion held symbolic value for the hosts. The match followed Argentina’s dominant 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign, in which they topped the South American standings with 38 points from 18 matches.

Angola, striving to return to the global stage, have only one World Cup appearance in 2006 and fell short in their 2026 qualifiers, winning just two matches. Despite the scoreline, the evening was a celebration of football, and Messi once again showcased the effortless skill and leadership that define his legendary career.
