Manchester City kept the Premier League title race wide open by taking full advantage of Arsenal’s surprise defeat, cruising to a 3-0 victory over Sunderland at the Etihad Stadium.

After watching the Gunners lose to Aston Villa earlier on Saturday, Pep Guardiola’s side ensured they didn’t slip up, moving to within two points of the league leaders.

City initially struggled to break down Sunderland’s disciplined five-man defence, but the deadlock was broken in a dramatic four-minute spell before halftime, thanks to goals from their defenders.

Ruben Dias opened the scoring with a thunderous 30-yard strike that took a deflection off Dan Ballard and curled into the top corner. The visitors’ cautious approach proved costly. On 35 minutes, Josko Gvardiol doubled the lead with a towering header from Phil Foden’s inswinging corner, giving City a comfortable cushion heading into the break.

The second half saw City press for more. Jeremy Doku’s curling effort struck the post, and Foden’s follow-up was brilliantly blocked. Erling Haaland’s hooked attempt was cleared off the line by Lutsharel Geertruida, before Rayan Cherki delivered a sublime assist for Foden to head home the third goal.

Sunderland had few first-half opportunities, with Enzo Le Fee firing wide. Their chances improved after the break, but Donnarumma made a crucial save to deny Wilson Isidor, and Granit Xhaka’s low drive rattled the post.

The match ended on a bitter note for Sunderland as Luke O’Nien was sent off in stoppage time for a studs-up challenge on Matheus Nunes. After a pitchside VAR review, his yellow card was upgraded to red.

The win keeps Manchester City firmly in the title hunt, capitalising on Arsenal’s unexpected stumble.
