NDC To Bind Obi, Kwankwaso With Anti Defection Oath
The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has introduced a new rule aimed at stopping elected officials from leaving the party after winning elections.
The policy, announced at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja, requires candidates to sign legal documents committing to vacate their seats if they defect.
The rule applies to presidential, governorship and legislative candidates, including key figures such as Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso.
Under the arrangement, candidates must sign indemnity and affidavit forms before contesting under the party’s platform.
Party leaders said the measure is designed to enforce loyalty and prevent what they described as a pattern of politicians abandoning parties after elections.
They argued that mandates secured through the party belong to the platform, and any defection should lead to loss of the elected position.
The policy has drawn attention because of the movement of major politicians across different parties in recent years.
However, key party figures linked to the rule were not present at the signing event in Abuja.
