Reps Approves State Police Amendment Bill
The House of Representatives has passed a constitutional amendment bill aimed at creating state police across Nigeria.
The vote took place in Abuja during a plenary session as lawmakers moved forward with security reform efforts.
The proposal comes in response to rising cases of insecurity, including kidnappings, terrorism, bandit attacks and violence in rural areas.
Lawmakers said the current central policing system is under heavy pressure and needs restructuring.
The bill follows months of discussions between the legislature and the executive on how to improve security across the country.
Officials say the aim is to improve local response to threats and strengthen policing at the state level.
The amendment now moves to the next legislative stages before it can become law. If fully adopted, states will be allowed to operate their own police forces alongside the federal police structure.
