The Nigerian Senate has approved a new resolution classifying kidnapping as an act of terrorism and pushing for amendments to the Terrorism Act to introduce the toughest possible punishment.
During Wednesday’s plenary, lawmakers unanimously agreed that anyone convicted of kidnapping should face the death penalty once the necessary legal changes are completed.
The move follows increasing alarm over the rising number of abductions nationwide and what senators describe as an urgent need to strengthen deterrence.
According to the resolution, “upon conviction for kidnapping, the death penalty must be enforced.”
Lawmakers said the decision is intended to curb the growing menace and send a clear warning to those involved in the crime.
