UNILAG Rape Case Sparks Outrage
A 20-year-old student of the University of Lagos has told a Lagos High Court in Ikeja how her rape complaint against a lecturer was allegedly dismissed.
She gave evidence before Justice Oyindamola Ogala as the first witness in the trial of Samuel Obinna Ojogbo, who is being prosecuted by the Lagos State Government.
The student said the incident happened on August 22, 2025, at the Akoka campus after she met the lecturer in his office following an exam.
She told the court that he allegedly assaulted her inside the office and later made promises linked to her academic progress. She said she left in distress and immediately reported what happened.
According to her, the case was first taken to lecturers in her department before reaching the Head of Department, who questioned the lack of evidence and asked why she did not record the incident.
She told the court that the HOD then advised her and her uncle to drop the matter and move on, a response she found upsetting.
The student said her uncle insisted on pursuing the case, leading to reports at the university’s Servicom unit, medical checks, and police involvement.
The matter later reached the Gender Unit for investigation, while attempts were made to settle it privately. The court adjourned the case to April 27, 2026, for cross-examination.
