FG Ends Terminal Leave For Civil Servants
The Federal Government has stopped the practice of granting civil servants a three-month mandatory terminal leave before retirement.
The directive affects Ministries, Departments and Agencies across the country and was issued by the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Didi Walson-Jack.
The government explained that the Public Service Rules do not provide for automatic leave before retirement.
Instead, retiring officers are required to give notice, attend a pre-retirement programme, and use the remaining period to complete pension and service record processes.
The circular was sent to top officials in the public service, including ministers, permanent secretaries, agency heads and service chiefs.
It noted that many institutions had wrongly treated the notice period as a leave period, leading to early withdrawal of officers from duty.
With the new directive, civil servants approaching retirement will now remain in active service until their official exit date.
The government said the move will help improve manpower use and ensure proper handling of retirement documentation across the public sector.
