The Ohanaeze Ndigbo has pledged to take a more active political stance ahead of the 2027 general elections, stating that it will only back leaders who have made a meaningful difference in the lives of their people.
The Cross River State President of the group, Chief Chukwuemeka Egwuonwu, made this declaration during a reception held in his honour on Sunday in Calabar.
Egwuonwu stated that the period of political indifference had come to an end, emphasising that the organisation would henceforth assess politicians based on their performance and moral standing.
“Every human being is a political animal, and Ohanaeze will not be different. Any person that has performed will have our blessings, but if we discover that someone has gone there to manipulate the masses and cause hardship, we will make a statement,” he said.
He commended Governor Bassey Otu for his inclusive style of governance, noting that his administration extends benefits to both indigenes and non-indigenes alike. He described the governor’s leadership as fair and people-centred.
In his address, the President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Senator John Mbata, encouraged the new Cross River State executive to promote unity and uphold the values of dignity, purpose, and cultural heritage.
Mbata added that the national body was repositioning Ohanaeze as a global platform and a unifying voice for the Igbo people both within Nigeria and in the diaspora.
Governor Otu, who was present at the occasion, commended the Igbo community for their vital contributions to trade and development within the state, assuring them of continued collaboration with his administration.
Egwuonwu, who succeeded the previous executive, promised to foster unity among members and broaden Ohanaeze’s influence throughout Cross River State.
