Kuje Prison Doctor Faces Negligence Allegations Over Inmate Death
Fresh allegations have surfaced at the Kuje Correctional Centre in Abuja following the death of Rwandan inmate Benjamin Relasss.
The claims emerged as officials from the Nigeria Correctional Service launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death while in custody.
Sources within the facility alleged that records reviewed by investigators showed the deceased had previously received treatment at the prison clinic.
They claimed this contradicted information reportedly provided during the inquiry. The sources also alleged that the inmate eventually stopped seeking medical care due to difficulties linked to access and treatment within the facility.
The investigation has also drawn attention to wider concerns inside the prison. Inmates alleged that a critically ill prisoner relied on contributions from fellow inmates for essential items before being moved to a hospital.
There were also claims that another inmate known for advocating better welfare and healthcare conditions was transferred to a correctional facility in Sokoto.
The allegations have renewed scrutiny of prison healthcare and inmate welfare, especially after an earlier directive from correctional authorities instructed officials nationwide to ensure that no inmate is denied treatment.
The Nigeria Correctional Service had not issued an official response to the allegations at the time of reporting, while investigations into the death continue.
